Pitch.

Share investing is difficult, complex and downright scary for the majority of people. Ownership is on the decline and share investing is increasingly unpopular among young adults. The main issue first time investors’ face when they try to learn how to invest is information overload. Multiple sites and services provide conflicting information which makes it extremely difficult for them to decide what is an appropriate investment they should make

The Simply Wall St app presents information on listed companies in a clear and concise format that allows users to understand the mechanics behind a company, and what they should look for in a good investment. It makes investing in the stock market a far more enjoyable and easy experience.

It visualises the stock market and currently works in the US, UK & Australia

Genesis.

Basically the founder and co founder of Simply Wall St are self-taught investors. The experience was extremely painful, hard, and full of many mistakes (and lost profit!). Al, the founder, had been playing around with the idea of visualising data for a while thinking it could be a way to make the process more easier and approachable for all. He ended up building the first prototype while he was on an oil rig off the coast of Australia! Al put his pitch on Angle List where Nick came across it. He ended up joining the team and they refined the app to what it is today.

Secret sauce.

Our lack of training in the stock market is a huge advantage. At the moment all the apps/systems out there are built “by investors, for investors”. They don’t take into account the first time investor, the average joe so to speak. We had the luxury of building something from the ground up that our users wanted, and tested every step of the way.

As a result you don’t see any boring tables of data or price charts. The information is all presented through infographics which our users love as it makes it much easier to understand.

At the core is the “Snwoflake”, a graphic that represents 30 checks we conduct on each company that gives an idea of what a company is doing in one quick glance.

Rise.

We just launched our public beta early in November with some media announcements in Australia. It has only been two weeks are we have already had over 4000 users access the system, which we are very happy about! Going forward we would like to secure some media in the US & UK, and then utilises partnership agreements with various financial firms to spread the word (and great blog sites like yours!)

Team.

Early days yet so we are a small lean team. We have Al, our CEO, who is quite into design, coding and general hustling. Nick, our COO, who likes keeping an eye on the business stuff/user experience and Jabin, our lead developer who works with Al building our cool product. We have some advisors who help us out as well.

Market.

Young professionals wanting to get into the stock market, first time investors, retirees that are in control of their investments and lastly existing investors that are confused by the market (which is actually over half of them!). The Simply Wall St app appeals to them all.

Business model & funding.

Our business model is based on a subscription service. While a free version of the app will always be available a monthly fee will unlock the full features of the app. At the moment we are in beta so you can have it all for free! However this will change halfway through next year.

In terms of funding our seed capital was provided by Sydney based accelerator AWI Ventures, who focus on financial related companies. We have just started our second round of seed fundraising and hope to close it in the not too distant future.

Fails.

Hah, how many words can we write! In all seriousness it is a learning journey, and if we did it again there would be things we would do differently. If we could give some advice you should always be asking yourself “is this task/activity/feature going to get me closer to launch, and grow users?” If the answer is no, or there is something else you can do which gets you there quicker then that is what you should be focusing your attention on.

Tomorrow.

We are currently in a fundraising round. Once that closes we have a number of cool features we want to implement (and our users have been requesting!) Things such as broker integration (so you can invest via the app) and dedicated native iOS and Andriod apps. This will have us working towards the end of our beta period halfway through next year.

What else ?

We are in beta and would love feedback! Feel free to have a play with it at //simplywall.st/ and let us know what your think.
